Vaastu and Feng Shui Tips
for Mandap Placement
Beyond aesthetics, the placement of your mandap can influence the energy and harmony of the ceremony. Traditional Indian vaastu and Chinese feng shui principles offer guidelines on shape, orientation and decoration that can help ensure an auspicious wedding.
Mandap Shape and Orientation
Vaastu shastra recommends that the mandap be a proper square, ensuring that all four corners possess equal energy. A square structure is believed to balance positive vibrations and create stability. The mandap should be positioned in the north‑east (Ishaanyam) corner of the wedding venue to attract auspicious energies.
Seating Direction
The wedding couple should sit facing east. This direction symbolises new beginnings and ensures that the couple receives the blessing of the rising sun. Guests are traditionally seated in the south‑west or north areas of the hall, while the entrance is ideally placed in the east or north.
Havan (Sacred Fire) Placement
The havan or sacred fire is central to Hindu weddings. Vaastu suggests that the fire be placed in the south-east corner (Agni konam) of the mandap. The fire pit should be of equal length, breadth and height; any breaks or irregularities may disrupt the flow of energy.
Choosing Auspicious Flowers
Floral decorations are integral to mandap design, but not all flowers are considered auspicious. Fresh flowers, such as carnations, daisies, chrysanthemums, and lotus, are recommended because they symbolise purity and prosperity. Avoid dried flowers and blooms, such as ketaki and karavira, which are considered inauspicious.
Feng Shui Enhancements
Feng shui focuses on creating harmony by balancing the five elements. When decorating your mandap and venue:
- Light up all corners: Place candles or diyas in each corner of the mandap to dispel darkness and maintain positive energy.
- Avoid clocks near the mandap: Timepieces are considered symbols of endings, so keep them away from the ceremony area.
- Use round tables: Sharp corners on tables can cause conflict among guests; opt for round or oval shapes.
Following these guidelines will not only respect cultural traditions but also create a serene and balanced atmosphere for your wedding ceremony.
